ME News reports that on September 2 (UTC+8), Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has issued the Crypto Travel Rule, requiring digital asset operators to verify ownership or control of self-custodied wallets when customers transfer crypto assets to or from such wallets, and to retain associated transaction information for at least five years for regulatory review. The new rule will take effect on February 27, 2027, providing regulated entities nearly six months to establish systems for transmitting, receiving, and monitoring transaction data. Pornanong Budsaratragoon, Secretary-General of the Thai SEC, stated that the rule aims to reduce the risk of digital asset operators being used for money laundering and terrorist financing. The rule was finalized after two rounds of public consultation this year (a principles draft in March and a consultation paper in June). According to FATF, as of 2026, 83% of surveyed jurisdictions have enacted Travel Rule legislation. Additionally, the Thai SEC proposed on Monday allowing intermediaries to provide retail investors access to certain regulated offshore exchange crypto derivatives, following prior progress in drafting rules for spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs.
