BlockBeats report: On September 8, the Swedish Tax Authority pursued approximately 540 million Swedish kronor (about $565 million) in taxes and penalties from six cryptocurrency mining companies located in Boden, a city in northern Sweden. The investigation found that these companies allegedly used complex corporate structures to conceal their actual cryptocurrency mining operations in order to qualify for tax incentives originally intended for standard data centers.
Patrik Lillqvist, head of the intelligence unit at the Swedish Tax Agency, stated that relevant companies concealed their mining activities through special arrangements in order to obtain tax benefits to which they were not entitled. This action stems from a sector-wide audit conducted by the Swedish Tax Agency from 2024 to 2026, during which nine cryptocurrency companies nationwide were assessed for over $50 million in unpaid taxes and penalties, with six of these companies located in Boden accounting for the majority. Some of the involved companies have filed appeals, but both the Swedish Administrative Court and the Court of Appeal have previously upheld the tax authority’s determinations. Among them, Bikupan Datacenter, unable to meet its tax obligations, has entered financial restructuring and is currently appealing the case to the Swedish Supreme Administrative Court.
