CME Group launched its CME CF Emerging Crypto Index on August 31, excluding Bitcoin and Ethereum. The index focuses on altcoins, with BNB, XRP, Solana, and HYPE making up 92.7% of the indicative weight. The Emerging Crypto Index and the broader Crypto Market Index do not settle futures, ETFs, or funds, serving as benchmarks only. Bitcoin market news continues to dominate, but this move highlights growing interest in Ethereum news and altcoin exposure.

TL;DR

  • CME launched its Emerging Crypto Index on August 31, excluding Bitcoin and Ethereum while providing real-time institutional pricing for eligible altcoins.
  • A CF Benchmarks research portfolio assigned BNB, XRP, Solana and HYPE a combined 92.7% indicative weight, showing heavy concentration among four tokens.
  • Neither new CME crypto index currently settles futures, ETFs or funds, meaning the benchmarks measure market performance but do not automatically create capital inflows into their constituents.

CME Group has begun publishing its new CME CF Emerging Crypto Index, creating an institutional benchmark for crypto assets beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum. The index launched August 31 alongside the broader CME CF Crypto Market Index, with CF Benchmarks serving as administrator and CME distributing real-time readings approximately once per second. The defining feature is simple but consequential: the emerging benchmark excludes the market’s two largest cryptocurrencies entirely. That design shifts attention toward the next tier of eligible assets and creates a clearer reference point for institutions tracking the altcoin market.

Four Tokens Could Dominate the Emerging Crypto Benchmark

An August 13 research portfolio from CF Benchmarks showed how concentrated that exposure could become. BNB carried an indicative 32.0% weight, XRP 27.6%, Solana 18.5% and HYPE 14.6%, leaving only 7.3% for all remaining assets. Those four tokens represented 92.7% of the indicative portfolio, meaning the benchmark may remain heavily driven by a small group despite excluding Bitcoin and Ethereum. The weights were research estimates rather than the confirmed August 31 constituent file, so investors still need the live composition before treating them as final allocations.

The concentration follows the index methodology rather than an equal-weight approach. Full market capitalization helps determine which eligible assets enter, while free-float capitalization determines their eventual weights, reducing the influence of locked, closely held or otherwise unavailable supply. Removing Bitcoin and Ethereum does not automatically create a balanced altcoin basket because capitalization weighting naturally transfers influence toward the next-largest eligible tokens. Formal reviews occur in June and December, with rank buffers designed to prevent excessive turnover when assets move near the selection cutoff, making the December review the first important test of how quickly leadership changes enter the benchmark.

The launch also carries an important limitation. Neither the Emerging Crypto Index nor the broader Crypto Market Index currently settles a CME contract, and no futures contract, ETF or investment fund accompanied their debut. For now, the indices are measurement tools rather than products that automatically channel capital into their constituent tokens. CME provides daily London, New York and APAC reference values, including weekends and bank holidays, which can help institutions value portfolios and compare regional performance. A separate future product could use either benchmark, but that would require another announcement and structure. That distinction matters when interpreting any immediate price impact from launch.
