Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman has raised concerns about excessive exuberance in the AI market, even as the firm ramps up its AI infrastructure investments. Managing $1.35 trillion in assets, Blackstone has focused on physical assets like data centers and power supplies through its portfolio company QTS. QTS expanded data center capacity 15 times since 2021 and is part of a $35 billion AI infrastructure platform with Broadcom and a $5 billion AI cloud venture with Google. Blackstone also plans a $1.75 billion IPO for its Blackstone Digital Infrastructure Trust (BXDC), targeting AI investments. With the AI data center market projected to top $1 trillion by 2030, Blackstone’s Q2 2026 earnings showed surging profits from AI. The firm’s limited crypto exposure included a past FTX link, but no major current holdings are reported. If BXDC succeeds, it could influence AI infrastructure pricing and crypto mining economics. Key AI + crypto news continues to shape market news.

Stephen Schwarzman, CEO of Blackstone, is doing something that looks contradictory on the surface but is actually the most Blackstone thing imaginable: investing aggressively in AI while warning the rest of the market not to get too excited about it.

The firm, which manages approximately $1.35 trillion in assets, has positioned itself as one of the largest private investors in AI infrastructure globally. And yet Schwarzman says he remains “mindful” of “excessive exuberance” in the space.

The picks and shovels playbook

Blackstone’s AI strategy isn’t about building chatbots or training foundation models. It’s about owning the physical infrastructure that makes all of that possible, the data centers, the power supplies, the fiber and cooling systems that AI companies need regardless of which model wins the race.

The firm’s portfolio company QTS tells the story pretty clearly. Since Blackstone first invested five years ago, QTS has increased its leased data center capacity by 15 times. The firm has formed a $35 billion AI infrastructure financing platform with Broadcom and is coordinating a $5 billion AI cloud venture with Google. It’s also preparing to launch the Blackstone Digital Infrastructure Trust, known as BXDC, targeting a $1.75 billion IPO specifically aimed at AI-centered investments.

The projected total addressable market for AI-focused data centers exceeds $1 trillion by 2030.

When the biggest buyer says slow down

Blackstone’s Q2 2026 earnings report seems to validate the infrastructure-first approach. The firm reported surging profits driven in part by its AI investments.

What this means for crypto and digital assets

Blackstone’s own history with crypto is limited and somewhat awkward. The firm had a past position linked to FTX, though no major current crypto holdings have been reported. If Blackstone’s BXDC IPO succeeds and the firm continues scaling its data center empire, it could establish a pricing benchmark for AI infrastructure that ripples across adjacent markets including crypto mining economics.
