Akash Network has successfully passed a major protocol update with 98.05% governance support to migrate from its Cosmos-based blockchain to Solana. Backed by 51.06 million $AKT tokens, the move aims to reduce costs and leverage Solana’s scalability and DePIN ecosystem. The network upgrade will convert $AKT into an SPL token through a one-time portal following two weeks of audits. This follows similar transitions by projects such as Zeta Network.
CoinDesk reports:

With Solana’s Vice President of Technology extending an invitation to migrate from a “dying blockchain,” holders of $AKT have overwhelmingly favored Proposal 346.

Akash Network is a decentralized cloud computing platform that has received overwhelming support and plans to migrate from its Cosmos-based sovereign blockchain to Solana.

Proposal 346, titled "Migrating the Akash Protocol to Solana," received 98.05% in favor, equivalent to approximately 510.6 million $AKT. Opposing votes accounted for 1.91%, while abstentions and vetoes represented 0.04% and 0%, respectively.

Voting opened on October 26 and will remain open until November 2, with a quorum requirement of 33.4%. The current participation rate of 58.10% has exceeded the quorum threshold. With 98.05% of votes in favor, the proposal is mathematically guaranteed to pass, even if all remaining votes were cast against it.

Why Akash Chose Solana

In October 2025, Akash began searching for a new blockchain when founder Greg Osuri announced plans to phase out the project’s native Cosmos SDK chain. At the time, the team stated they would evaluate various networks based on security, liquidity, community strength, and growth potential.

In a blog post, the Akash team explained their reasons for choosing Solana. Akash currently relies on approximately 100 validators to secure its blockchain and maintains custom versions of Cosmos SDK, CometBFT, and gogoproto. The team believes that migrating to Solana will reduce infrastructure and maintenance costs by eliminating the independent consensus layer. The team estimates that total transaction fees on Solana for the entire market amount to about 0.075 $SOL per day, equivalent to approximately $7.50 at current prices.

The team also highlighted Solana’s growth potential. Akash estimated that its market processes approximately 15,000 transactions per day, while Solana reported 112 million daily user transactions.

Solana’s established DePIN ecosystem is also one of the reasons for this migration. Helium, Render, io.net, Hivemapper, and Nosana are already operating on this network. Akash also cites Helium’s 2023 migration and Render’s token conversion as examples of existing projects moving their infrastructure or tokens to Solana.

Finally, Akash highlighted Solana’s liquidity and user base, noting its stablecoin supply of approximately $15 billion, around 2.2 million daily paying users, and leadership in weekly decentralized exchange trading volume. The team believes this ecosystem enables its decentralized compute market to reach a broader audience of on-chain users. The team also mentioned integrations within the Cosmos ecosystem, including Noble’s exit in March 2026, as part of the evolving landscape.

How will the $AKT migration proceed?

Under Proposal 346, $AKT will be issued as an SPL token, with holders receiving 1 SPL version of $AKT for every $AKT burned on the Cosmos chain. The team expects the token to launch approximately two weeks after proposal approval, subject to the token and migration portal passing two independent audits. This one-way exchange portal will remain open for two years after launch.

Self-custody holders will connect their Cosmos wallet and select a Solana address. The proposal states that they can complete the swap without holding $SOL. Balances held by Console will be automatically migrated, while the exchange will determine its own migration schedule. Users holding $AKT on Osmosis or other chains connected via Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) must first transfer their tokens back to Akash’s native chain.

Staked $AKT will follow a separate process: first, unlocking and claiming pending rewards, then entering a queue for conversion after the 21-day unlock period.

What happens to the provider, tenant, and staking?

Market migration will proceed after the audit and migration drill are completed. A separate governance vote will determine the switch date. Providers must upgrade their software and complete registration on Solana. Tenants can retain their deployment configuration files, i.e., SDL files, and existing leases will remain valid during the transition.

Will Solana continue to absorb "dying blockchains"?

Over the past two years, the crypto industry has seen a broader trend of consolidation, with an increasing number of projects abandoning their own blockchains in favor of migrating to Solana. Akash is the latest example of this trend, following Zeta Network’s decision in September 2026 to abandon its dedicated Layer-1 chain, which had been operational since 2023.

Zeta’s governance proposal received 99.4% support, driving its flagship application, Anuma AI, and over 300,000 connected users to migrate to Solana. The project cited Solana’s emerging AI infrastructure—including the Agent Registry and x402 payment layer—as key reasons for the migration.

Akash’s proposal was also directly invited by Jacob Creech, Vice President of Technology at the Solana Foundation. Creech has urged Layer-1, Layer-2, and applications running on “dying blockchains” to consider migrating to Solana. He believes that Solana has handled significant network traffic, consistently scaled its capacity, and demonstrated the security suitable for institutional use.

As more projects reassess the costs and benefits of maintaining independent chains, Solana’s established liquidity, infrastructure, and user base may make it an increasingly attractive destination for migration.
