Over the past couple of days, from massive improvements in video editing and 3D game creation via Codex to the release of Google’s new music model, Lyria 3.5, it feels like a springtime for creators. Looking back, I revisited the question: What fundamentally happened during the Renaissance? First, new tools of production. Oil painting, linear perspective, anatomical knowledge, printing press—suddenly, people could express things they previously couldn’t. Second, the cost of knowledge dissemination dropped dramatically. Especially with Gutenberg’s printing press, after around 1450, copying knowledge no longer relied on manual transcription. Third, a new patronage system emerged. Families like the Medici funded artists. Artists were no longer just “craftsmen”—they began to become what we now recognize as creators, intellectuals, and celebrities. Fourth, people began redefining what was worth creating. Previously, much art served religious purposes; later, it turned to depicting humans, the body, nature, the individual, and secular life. I believe all four of these points have clear parallels in today’s world.
