U.S. federal prosecutors stated that Edward Zimbardi, suspected of operating a cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme involving approximately $165 million, was deported from Fiji to the United States on August 14. The case was indicted by a federal grand jury in the Northern District of Georgia on July 8, with prosecutors alleging that he faces 25 federal charges.
Prosecution's allegations
The prosecution stated that The Crypto Program raised over $165 million from thousands of cryptocurrency investors.
The indictment shows that over $34 million of the related funds were used for foreign exchange trading, and approximately $10 million were allegedly used for personal expenses, including real estate, luxury vehicles, and alimony.
Current case progress
U.S. prosecutors stated that Zimbardi is expected to make his initial court appearance in Los Angeles, after which the case will be transferred to Georgia to proceed further. Prosecutors also plan to request continued detention.
The FBI has established a dedicated channel for investors involved in The Crypto Program to submit transaction details and contact information. Relevant authorities have indicated that additional documentation may be requested later for the recovery process.
Scope of the related investigation
U.S. federal, state, and Fijian agencies participated in this operation. In addition to the FBI, the SEC, the CFTC, and relevant agencies from California and Georgia provided assistance.
