ChainCatcher report: U.S. Bank (a subsidiary of U.S. Bancorp), the fifth-largest commercial bank in the United States, has successfully completed a real-time cross-border payment test using its proprietary USD stablecoin, USBDC, facilitated via the Stellar blockchain between its North American and European entities. As one of the first bank-issued stablecoins deployed on a public blockchain, USBDC aims to bridge gaps in the global banking system through its 24/7 transaction capability. The pilot validated key functions of USBDC, including minting, payment, redemption, freezing, and recovery, while also testing the bank’s internally developed digital assets platform—the foundational infrastructure for issuing, managing, and transferring tokenized assets—to enable seamless integration between traditional banking systems and blockchain networks. Gunjan Kedia, Chairman and CEO of U.S. Bank, stated that this real-time pilot demonstrates the bank’s ability to accelerate global cash management and fund flows. The test was conducted under a strategic partnership with the Stellar Development Foundation, with future use cases including liquidity management, collateral transfer, and cross-border treasury operations. As global regulation for stablecoins advances, banks are accelerating their entry into the space: last week, 21 financial institutions—including Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, and UBS—announced plans to form a company to issue a stablecoin, targeting a launch of the USD token in the first half of 2027.
