Benzinga Pro data showed Sony Group shares trading at $27.70 in Thursday's premarket session, a gain of 6.75%, after better-than-expected fiscal second-quarter results. Sony reported revenue of ¥3.43 trillion, an increase of about 10% from a year earlier. Sony's operating profit reached ¥622.3 billion, up 45% year over year. Reuters cited an average analyst forecast of ¥505 billion for operating profit. Successful entertainment releases supported Sony's film, gaming and music businesses.
Sony increased its full-year sales forecast from ¥12.5 trillion to ¥13 trillion. Sony lifted its operating income forecast from ¥1.72 trillion to ¥1.87 trillion. Sony increased its operating cash flow forecast from ¥1.5 trillion to ¥1.6 trillion. Sony also increased expected profits for gaming, music, pictures and image sensing. The higher full-year profit outlook came despite increased memory costs and tighter PlayStation hardware supply.
Sony's film business generated 48% more revenue than a year earlier, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day providing the main contribution. Film revenue increased 37.8% when measured in dollars. Film profit reached ¥92.6 billion, compared with ¥13.9 billion a year earlier. Deadline reported that Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao described the Pictures division's operating income as a second-quarter record. Tao credited Sony's distribution services, including PlayStation Network and Crunchyroll, together with successful intellectual property including Spider-Man, Wolverine and Ella Langley.
Sony's gaming revenue grew 9% year over year, supported by higher sales of first-party software. Marvel's Wolverine was among the quarter's major releases. Sony expects Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled for November 19, to provide another boost for PlayStation. Sony sold 2.6 million PlayStation 5 consoles during the quarter, compared with 4 million a year earlier. Bloomberg reported that limited supply, particularly of PS5 Pro consoles, may have restricted sales more than demand did. Kantan Games founder Serkan Toto said more available PlayStation 5 Pro consoles could have made Sony's performance even stronger.
The results supported Sony's move toward entertainment and original intellectual property and away from primary reliance on hardware. Sony is connecting gaming, film, anime and music operations to expand franchises into different formats. The Financial Times cited examples including the HBO television adaptation of PlayStation's The Last of Us and the Demon Slayer animated franchise. Bloomberg reported that streaming demand for the Michael Jackson catalog, which Sony co-owns, reached roughly four times normal levels after the Michael biopic's release. Toyo Research and Advice's Hideki Yasuda said investments in films, games and music were delivering results and reducing earnings volatility associated with Sony's earlier hardware-focused business model.
Rising memory prices remain a principal near-term challenge for Sony. Memory shortages driven by AI have increased component costs for consumer electronics, including gaming hardware. Sony said in July that sufficient memory had been secured for the current year's expected sales volume. Tao said continued active user engagement will be important for profitability while Sony faces memory-cost pressure and invests in the next gaming platform.
MST Financial analyst David Gibson said Spider-Man contributed much more than expected and described the results as substantially above expectations, accompanied by higher guidance. However, Gibson considered gaming's quarterly performance less compelling. Gibson said the approaching Grand Theft Auto VI release and strong pre-orders could improve the outlook quickly.
