That matters for trading systems, oracle consumers and automated market makers, where blockchain data can become outdated quickly. More frequent blocks provide applications with a finer view of changes in account balances, prices and transaction activity.

The upgrade also continues a broader performance program. SIMD-0525 introduced staged reductions from the original 400ms target through 350ms and 300ms before reaching 250ms. The proposal keeps epochs at 432,000 slots, meaning the shorter slots also reduce the expected duration of an epoch. At 250ms, an epoch lasts about 30 hours rather than roughly 36 hours.
