A vulnerability alert emerged after Asymmetric Research disclosed a flaw in Solana’s svmgov program that could have disrupted validator-independent voting. The issue was reported to the Solana Foundation on July 10 and patched on August 3, prior to the SGP-0002 vote on August 24. On-chain news analysis indicates that the proposal, aimed at accelerating SOL inflation reduction, would have narrowly failed without the fix.

ChainCatcher report: Blockchain security research firm Asymmetric Research disclosed a vulnerability in Solana’s on-chain governance program, svmgov: when validators did not participate in voting, independently submitted votes from their delegators might not be counted in the final tally. The vulnerability was reported to the Solana Foundation on July 10 and was patched on mainnet on August 3, prior to the governance vote on August 24. Based on on-chain data, Asymmetric Research estimated that if the vulnerability had not been fixed, the approval rate for SGP-0002—a proposal aimed at accelerating the reduction of SOL inflation—could have dropped from the actual 67% to 66.65%, falling below the 66.67% approval threshold. The vulnerability was remedied before the vote and did not alter the outcome of the proposal.
