DeepFlow Summary: As the core liquidity hub of the Cosmos ecosystem, Osmosis has just completed a landmark revolution in its tokenomics. The community overwhelmingly approved Proposal 1053 with 91.07% support, officially ending the inflationary minting mechanism for the OSMO token. This includes zeroing out daily issuance, halting the daily release of over 30,000 tokens to developers, and locking up the remaining 51.9 million unvested tokens. More importantly, staking rewards are now fully anchored to actual protocol revenue. Combined with the previously approved Proposal 1052, which increased fee sharing, Osmosis has率先 torn away the long-standing facade of “artificially high yields” in DeFi, entering a new era of “absolute deflation” centered on transaction fee distributions and continuous token burns via the ProtoRev module.
Say goodbye to dilution: 91% majority vote ends inflation and freezes 51.9 million developer tokens
In the world of decentralized finance, inflationary tokenomics—relying on token minting to subsidize stakers and liquidity providers—was once the standard weapon for rapidly launching early protocols, yet it often became a persistent dilution nightmare for long-term holders. On October 26, Osmosis, the core decentralized exchange of the Cosmos ecosystem, reached its most pivotal moment in governance history. On-chain data shows that the highly anticipated Proposal 1053 passed successfully with an overwhelming 91.07% in favor and a network-wide voting participation rate of 65.38%.
According to the core resolution of the proposal, Osmosis’s underlying Mint Module will be permanently discontinued, eliminating the issuance of new OSMO tokens through inflation. The daily inflationary output of over 91,000 tokens will be reduced to zero. This means that neither validator staking rewards nor the community treasury will receive any newly minted tokens created through inflation. The persistent inflationary selling pressure that has long weighed on secondary market investors has thus been completely and permanently removed.
Alongside the halt in further minting, an immediate stop has been implemented on the scheduled release of tokens to the team. The proposal explicitly suspends the linear vesting unlock of approximately 30,440 OSMO per day to developers. The remaining approximately 51.9 million tokens originally slated for release to the core development module will be fully locked in the developer vesting contract account. Should the development team wish to restart the unlocking of these funds in the future, they must submit a separate community governance proposal for public review. This move has significantly strengthened community confidence in the deep alignment of interests between the core team and token holders.
From "Fake APR" to Real Dividends: A Dual Proposal to Rebuild the Staking Rewards Flywheel
After stopping inflationary issuance, the most pressing question for stakers is undoubtedly: Where does the staking APR come from? For a long time, the so-called "high APY" offered by most PoS blockchains and DeFi protocols has essentially been a numbers game — a dilution of holders' own assets. Osmosis’s recent reform fundamentally shifts staking rewards from the illusory "dilution compensation" to tangible "protocol revenue sharing (Real Yield)."
Although the proposal acknowledges that ending inflationary issuance will eliminate approximately 2 percentage points of nominal staking APR previously contributed by new token minting, the community has already prepared a yield buffer through a multi-pronged approach. Not long ago, the Osmosis community overwhelmingly passed Proposal 1052, increasing the share of non-OSMO trading fees (such as Taker Fees on major assets like USDC and BTC) allocated to stakers from 22.5% to 47.5%, directly adding approximately 1.7 percentage points of real yield to stakers.
Through the sophisticated interplay of Proposals 1052 and 1053, the reward structure for stakers has undergone a fundamental transformation. Previously, stakers received inflationary native tokens that continuously lost value and increased selling pressure; now, they receive dividend distributions in high-quality cross-chain hard currency fees directly generated by the network’s active trading. Stakers’ real yields are no longer tied to token inflation, but instead move in sync with the actual transaction volume of Osmosis as a cross-chain liquidity hub.
Absolute deflation begins: Protocol fees and ProtoRev destruction work together to tighten circulation.
When the supply-side faucet is completely shut off, the demand-side consumption mechanism pushes tokenomics directly into a rare "absolute deflationary" channel. Under the hard constraint of zero additional issuance, Osmosis’s existing token burn flywheel begins to exert a powerful supply contraction effect. The primary driver comes from the mandatory burn portions of regular transaction fees and Taker Fees. Even after increasing the staking share, 52.5% of all non-OSMO fees across the network are still directly used for secondary market buybacks and permanent destruction.
A more powerful deflationary engine is ProtoRev module, a pioneering on-chain arbitrage and MEV-capture mechanism introduced by Osmosis. As a natively integrated arbitrage bot within the protocol, ProtoRev automatically captures price imbalances and arbitrage profits generated by cross-pool trades within blocks, directing all proceeds toward validator rewards and OSMO burns. Without any offsetting inflation, every large on-chain transaction and every cross-chain arbitrage event directly reduces the total network supply of OSMO.
The shift from high inflation to net deflation has fundamentally reshaped OSMO’s valuation model. According to on-chain analytics firms, as the appchain ecosystem thrives and trading depth recovers, holders will fully benefit from the deflationary premium driven by the absolute supply-demand imbalance. OSMO is evolving from a mere liquidity incentive token into a core value-capturing asset with both cash flow dividends and deflationary properties.
Industry implications of a paradigm shift: DeFi will ultimately return to its commercial roots and internal growth.
Osmosis's aggressive and decisive tokenomics overhaul has sent shockwaves throughout the cross-chain ecosystem and the broader Web3 space. Over the past several years of the DeFi boom, the "Ponzi wheel" of minting tokens to chase TVL and masking weak fundamentals with high yields has become an industry plague, causing countless projects to rapidly descend into death spirals once liquidity dried up. As a leading DEX that has operated for years, Osmosis's bold decision to cut its inflation crutch clearly points the industry toward sustainable development.
This transformation sends a clear signal to the entire industry: crypto protocols will ultimately move beyond the era of subsidy-driven, unregulated growth and return to their commercial roots and intrinsic ability to generate revenue. Only protocols that truly achieve product-market fit (PMF), with solid trading volumes and genuine fee income, dare to end token subsidies and fully entrust their earnings to the market. When false prosperity fades, the "self-sustaining capacity" supported by real fees and deflationary mechanisms becomes the strongest moat against cyclical fluctuations.
At a time when Cosmos’ interconnected blockchains and the full-chain liquidity narrative are being redefined, Osmosis has率先 completed its rite of passage from a “liquidity farm” to a “real-yield financial infrastructure.” For investors, the maturity of a protocol is no longer measured by inflated, abstract APR figures on its dashboard, but by its willingness to shut down the money printer and distribute real profits to loyal users. Osmosis’s self-revolution may well be the starting gun for a new cycle of DeFi value reassessment.
