ME News reports that on August 26 (UTC+8), MultiversX’s Supernova upgrade decouples consensus from execution, enabling the network to reach agreement on blocks before processing transactions. Prior to the upgrade, block production followed a sequential pattern: proposers selected transactions, executed them locally, and submitted blocks containing the results; validators had to re-execute the same transactions before voting, making execution part of the critical consensus path. Supernova changes this sequence: proposers select transactions and propose blocks directly without prior execution; validators can vote immediately upon confirming the proposal complies with protocol rules, while execution proceeds asynchronously in the background. Execution results are typically referenced and attested in the header of the next block, leaving execution approximately one block (about 600 milliseconds) behind consensus. To address validity verification challenges introduced by decoupling, Supernova introduces a virtual mempool state that tracks pending nonces, expected balance consumption, and transactions proposed but not yet confirmed by consensus, providing proposers with a forward-looking account view. Additionally, the Execution-Result Inclusion Estimator (EIE) limits the number of execution results that can be referenced in a block based on the capacity safely handleable by minimum-spec nodes; an automatic backpressure mechanism reduces block capacity when execution falls behind. Supernova has been producing 600-millisecond blocks on testnet and devnet since August 20, with mainnet activation expected on September 10, 2026. (Source: ChainCatcher)
MultiversX Supernova Upgrade Decouples Consensus and Execution; Mainnet Activation Expected on September 10

MultiversX’s Supernova network upgrade decouples consensus and execution, enabling faster block validation. The on-chain update marks a shift from sequential block production to a model where proposers submit blocks first, with execution handled asynchronously. Validators now vote immediately after protocol checks, while execution results appear in the next block header. A virtual memory pool and EIE mechanism help manage execution load. Supernova has been live on testnet since August 20, with mainnet activation scheduled for September 10, 2026.
