MoonPay has unveiled PayBox, a noncustodial “payment vault” that hands conversational AIs — like ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude — the ability to prepare and execute crypto and card payments on a user’s behalf, while keeping users in control. What PayBox does - Connect a PayBox vault to ChatGPT or Claude via a custom connector, describe a payment or crypto move in plain language, and the AI can research options, prepare the transaction and execute it within the permissions you set. - Supported crypto actions include buying tokens with fiat, swapping, bridging assets across chains, and depositing into DeFi protocols. PayBox can also complete everyday commercial purchases such as booking flights, reserving restaurants and buying goods from online retailers. How authorization works - PayBox is noncustodial: users retain control and neither MoonPay nor the connected AI can move funds alone. Users choose one of two authorization models: - Always Ask: every transaction requires a one-time passkey approval. The approval is single-use and can’t be reused for a different payment. - Autonomous: the assistant can act without per-transaction approvals, but only within spending limits and rules the user sets. Any change to permissions or rules requires another passkey. - These controls let users calibrate how much autonomy the AI has — from fully supervised to limited autonomous execution. Security and payment methods - Wallet transactions use multiparty computation (MPC) to split private keys and store them across secure hardware environments. MoonPay says neither it nor the AI can independently reconstruct a full key or authorize a transfer. - Card payments use Visa’s agentic commerce protocol, enabling assistants to complete approved purchases without receiving or storing the underlying card number. Supported networks and integrations - PayBox supports Solana and a set of EVM-compatible networks including Ethereum, Hyperliquid, Tempo, Base, Robinhood Chain, Arbitrum and Polygon. - It integrates with x402, an open payment standard built for services that accept AI-initiated transactions. MoonPay’s first x402 integrations cover travel bookings, restaurant reservations and purchases from major online retailers. - That coverage allows multi-step flows in one conversation — for example: buy a token, bridge it to another chain and deposit it into a DeFi protocol — so long as every step complies with the vault’s permissions. Origins and context - PayBox uses key-management technology from Sodot, a company MoonPay acquired earlier in 2026. MoonPay says Sodot’s infrastructure secures over $50 billion in assets across more than 10 million wallets. - The launch follows MoonPay’s broader push into tokenized financial products — notably an earlier integration that added Franklin Templeton’s BENJI tokenized money market fund to MoonPay Trade, letting institutions swap stablecoins for BENJI on-chain. What this means for users - For consumers, PayBox connects conversational AI directly to payments while aiming to preserve user control through passkeys, spending limits and MPC key-splitting. In the U.S., Visa’s agentic commerce support could make AI-assisted card purchases more practical. - Limitations remain: availability of specific assets, DeFi protocols and payment services will depend on users’ locations and provider rules. Availability - MoonPay says PayBox is live via the PayBox website. Users must connect a vault to a supported AI platform through a custom connector before issuing payment instructions.
