London, October 19, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Global payment infrastructure platform Mercuryo, in collaboration with the community-driven blockchain ecosystem BNB Chain, has released a report highlighting the diverse use cases of stablecoins. The report states that stablecoins can be used for both small-value remittances and large-scale transactions by “crypto whales” transferring digital assets within capital markets.
Research found that in the third quarter of 2026, 77.4% of stablecoin transfers on BNB Chain were under $100, while transfers of $10,000 or more accounted for 66.2% of the total transfer value.
This report, titled “Stablecoins on BNB Chain: From Fiat to Crypto and Back to Fiat,” combines Mercuryo’s Q3 2026 fiat-to-crypto and crypto-to-fiat transaction data with on-chain data from BNB Chain to provide complementary insights into how stablecoins flow. The report highlights that the findings demonstrate the versatility and accessibility of stablecoins, as well as how they serve vastly different use cases on the same permissionless blockchain infrastructure.
Daily transfers and large-scale capital flows
The report notes that the current market serves multiple purposes. Stablecoins remain an important component of the digital asset market, but the data also reveals patterns consistent with their growing role in everyday stablecoin payments, such as cross-border remittances. Most on-chain transfers involve small amounts, and stablecoins are frequently used to convert between local currencies and digital dollars.
The median network fee for a stablecoin transfer on BNB Chain is just $0.0068. The report states that low costs are important for individuals sending remittances and institutions settling high-value payments. Together, these data points indicate that the same blockchain infrastructure can support both high-frequency, low-value transfers and large-scale capital flows.
Arthur Firstov, Chief Business Officer at Mercuryo, said: “Mercuryo’s collaboration with BNB Chain highlights one of the most defining characteristics of stablecoins—their versatility. The same permissionless blockchain infrastructure that enables small transfers and cross-border payments also underpins large-scale trading and liquidity in capital markets. Stablecoins were originally designed as a tool to hold value between trades for those building Bitcoin positions. Today, as the efficiency and cost reductions of blockchain technology benefit a broader audience, we are seeing these tokens used in a wide variety of applications.”
Local currency and familiar payment methods
The report found that 70% of the payment value for purchasing USD-denominated stablecoins on BNB Chain via Mercuryo in Q3 2026 came from non-U.S. dollar currencies. The U.S. accounted for only 9.8% of the purchase value, with Asia being the largest regional market at 39.3%, followed by Europe at 33.4%.
Payment preferences also mirror mainstream online shopping behaviors. The report shows that on-chain activity reflects everyday shopping patterns: Apple Pay and Google Pay together accounted for 69.5% of purchase transactions and 57.7% of purchase value via Mercuryo, up from 42.3% in Q3 2025; among purchases with device records, 87.2% were completed via mobile phones.
Worldpay’s “2026 Global Payments Report” shows that digital wallets collectively accounted for 56% of global e-commerce transaction value in 2025. The report states that this trend indicates stablecoin purchases are increasingly compatible with the online checkout experiences consumers are already familiar with, rather than requiring each user to adopt a dedicated crypto payment method.
Self-custody dominates
The report shows that self-custody dominates across all stages of stablecoin usage. Of the value of stablecoins purchased through Mercuryo, 59.5% flowed to self-custody wallets; on the entire BNB Chain, individual addresses held 63.3% of the total stablecoin value; and of the withdrawal value processed through Mercuryo, 59.8% originated from self-custody wallets.
Although these datasets measure wallet activity differently, the findings indicate that self-custody wallets remain crucial for acquiring and managing stablecoins. These wallets allow users to directly hold and transfer assets while providing access to a variety of applications and services within the on-chain ecosystem.
Stablecoins are in active circulation.
The report also found that 64.3% of the stablecoin value on BNB Chain was transferred within the previous 30 days, indicating that a significant portion of this value is in active circulation. The report notes that this outcome highlights the dual role of stablecoins: facilitating value transfer while continuing to support trading, decentralized finance (DeFi), and broader on-chain activities.
The report concludes that, taken together, these findings indicate that stablecoins are more than just digital tokens stored on a blockchain—they have become an integral part of the broader financial lifecycle, connecting fiat currency, self-custody wallets, on-chain applications, and traditional payment infrastructure to serve financial needs beyond mere transactions.
The fee for transferring stablecoins on the BNB Chain is $0.0068. Additional fees may apply when buying, selling, or exchanging for stablecoins.
Stablecoins carry risks, including potential loss of value, issuer and redemption risks, and risks associated with the underlying blockchain. They are not equivalent to bank deposits or cash and are not covered by deposit protection schemes.
