Meme coin news: Hunter Biden's LAPTOP token is set to launch on Base on Sept. 9. Traders have already spent $6.9 million on copycat tokens across multiple blockchains. The project will issue 1 billion tokens, with 30% going to Biden and founders. Airdrops will target TRUMP coin losers and Biden's Substack subscribers. Unrelated LAPTOP tokens are already trading on Base and Solana. On-chain news shows growing activity in the meme coin space.

Hunter Biden’s new meme coin does not launch until Wednesday, but traders have already spent millions chasing tokens using the same name.

Biden plans to launch LAPTOP on Coinbase-built Base on Sept. 9, according to The Wall Street Journal. The token takes its name from the computer that became a fixture of U.S. political controversy before the 2020 election.

The project will issue 1 billion tokens, with 30% allocated to Biden and the other founders. Those founder holdings will initially be locked for six months and then vest over two years.

But there is already a problem: LAPTOP copycats are trading before the official launch.

$6.9M Traded Before the Real LAPTOP Even Launched

The Defiant identified the first new LAPTOP token on Robinhood Chain around the time news of Biden’s launch began circulating.

Another 22 pools followed within 53 minutes across Robinhood Chain, Solana, TON and BNB Chain. Combined trading volume reached approximately $6.9 million by 15:45 UTC.

One Robinhood Chain version alone generated roughly $5.43 million across more than 31,000 trades.

None of those tokens was identified as the official Sept. 9 Base launch.

Adding to the confusion, a LAPTOP token has already been trading on Base since June 27, while an unrelated Solana token named Hunter Biden’s Laptop dates back to 2024.

That makes the eventual official contract address particularly important for traders trying to distinguish Biden’s project from unrelated tokens.

LAPTOP Is Specifically Targeting TRUMP Losers

The strangest piece of the tokenomics is a planned airdrop tied directly to Donald Trump’s meme coin.

Up to 20% of LAPTOP’s supply will be distributed across groups including wallets that lost money trading TRUMP, Biden’s Substack subscribers and a mailing list associated with journalist Andrew Callaghan.

The pitch has plenty of potential recipients.

TRUMP trades around $2.25, approximately 97% below its $73.43 January 2025 peak.

Coinpaper previously found that roughly 1.48 million wallets that bought TRUMP were sitting on unrealized losses, although one investor can control multiple wallets.

Another 30% of the supply could eventually be burned if 30 predetermined political and market events occur. Reported triggers include a Democrat winning the 2028 presidential election, Bitcoin reaching a new record and LAPTOP overtaking TRUMP’s market capitalization. Tokens connected to conditions that fail may instead go to charity.

Political Meme Coins Come Full Circle

LAPTOP effectively turns the political meme-coin trade back against Trump.

TRUMP launched in January 2025 and briefly reached a market capitalization near $15 billion before collapsing. Our TRUMP explainer details how concentrated ownership and political branding shaped the token from the beginning.

The project later faced scrutiny around holder events and political access, while the broader crypto ethics debate reached Congress.

LAPTOP now borrows exactly that political-token playbook, while making TRUMP’s losing holders part of its distribution strategy.

There is no guarantee those holders recover anything. LAPTOP has not launched, has no established market price, and its eventual value will depend almost entirely on demand after Sept. 9.
