Odaily Planet Daily reports that Sandy Kaul, Head of Digital Assets and Innovation at investment management firm Franklin Templeton, stated that the AI agent economy will increase demand for blockchain protocols to facilitate micropayments between machines. Traditional card networks are unsuitable for agent-based payments due to high fees and settlement times. Sandy Kaul noted that blockchain networks such as Aptos, Solana, and BNB Chain are better suited for the agent economy, as their transactions settle in seconds—faster than Visa’s 1- to 3-day settlement timeline. In a joint report by payment company Visa and investment platform Artemis, it was stated that traditional card networks designed for low-frequency human commerce cannot support AI agents, which require near-zero fees and faster settlement. Since its launch in May 2025, Coinbase’s x402 payment protocol has processed $15 million in adjusted transaction volume and over 109 million adjusted transactions.
