Fireblocks has joined the Agentic Payments Alliance (APA) to support AI + crypto news developments. The APA, launched by Rain on August 18, includes Visa, Mastercard, Fiserv, Circle, and Solana. The group is building protocols for AI agents to handle financial transactions. Fireblocks recently released its Agentic Payments Suite for on-chain news and agent-driven stablecoin transfers across multiple blockchains.

The future of commerce might not involve you at all. Or at least, not the part where you actually click “buy.”

Fireblocks, the digital asset infrastructure platform that has secured over $14 trillion in transactions, has joined the Agentic Payments Alliance (APA) as a founding member. The coalition, announced on August 18 by enterprise stablecoin infrastructure provider Rain, brings together more than 25 organizations to build the rails for a world where autonomous AI agents execute payments on behalf of humans.

The roster reads like a payments industry all-star team: Visa, Mastercard, Fiserv, Circle, and Solana are all founding members.

What agentic commerce actually means

The term “agentic commerce” describes a model where AI agents don’t just recommend purchases or fill out forms. They initiate, authorize, and complete financial transactions autonomously.

McKinsey projects this market could reach $3 to $5 trillion globally by 2030. The APA’s mandate covers several critical areas: agent authorization protocols, fraud prevention frameworks, and regulatory advocacy.

Fireblocks’ agentic playbook

Fireblocks launched its Agentic Payments Suite on May 20, a product specifically designed to let Payment Service Providers and fintechs facilitate agent-initiated stablecoin transactions across multiple blockchains.

Around the same time, Fireblocks also joined the x402 Foundation, contributing to security protocols focused on transaction integrity and governance.

Why stablecoins are the preferred fuel

Stablecoins sit at the center of nearly every agentic payment vision being proposed. Traditional card networks process transactions through layers of intermediaries, each adding latency and cost. Stablecoins on programmable blockchains can settle in seconds with embedded logic, making them a natural fit for machine-to-machine transactions.

Circle’s presence as a founding APA member reinforces this trajectory. As the issuer of USDC, the company has a direct interest in seeing stablecoins become the default currency for autonomous agents. Solana’s involvement similarly points to which blockchain ecosystems are positioning themselves to capture agentic transaction volume.

The stakes and the risks

Founding members of the APA will get early access to Rain’s Agentic Startup Program. Fraud prevention in a world of autonomous agents is fundamentally different from today’s models. Current fraud detection relies heavily on behavioral patterns, things like typing speed, location data, and purchase history. An AI agent doesn’t type, doesn’t have a location in the traditional sense, and its purchase patterns might look nothing like a human’s.

Regulatory questions loom even larger. Most financial regulations assume a human is making decisions. When an AI agent initiates a $10,000 wire transfer, does that trigger the same reporting requirements? Who bears responsibility if the agent is compromised? The alliance’s focus on regulatory advocacy suggests its members understand that technology alone won’t solve these problems.
