Coinbase expands AI and crypto news with new agent access to crypto and stock trading. The platform now supports standalone portfolios, crypto spot trading, select derivatives, and S&P 500 stocks. Users can restrict AI agent access to specific assets. API-enabled agents can transfer funds within authorized portfolios but cannot withdraw to external addresses. The x402 payment protocol has processed over 100 million transactions on Base and Solana. Full details of AI financial accounts remain unannounced.
CoinDesk reports:

Coinbase is further integrating AI agents into its trading account system. The company disclosed that Coinbase for Agents, designed for AI applications, now supports standalone portfolios, cryptocurrency trading, select derivatives, and stock features; however, a more comprehensive "AI financial account" has not yet been announced with a launch timeline or product details.

On September 9, Brian Armstrong responded to Ruby on Rails creator DHH, stating that Coinbase is building financial accounts for AI. However, this statement was more of a directional disclosure than an officially launched banking product.

Independent portfolios are now supported.

According to Coinbase documentation, users can create a separate portfolio for AI agents, deposit only the assets they are willing to risk, and restrict account permissions to that portfolio alone. This approach limits the available funds in case the agent misinterprets instructions or places an unusual order.

Currently, this service acts as a trading bridge between supported AI applications and Coinbase Advanced Trade, accessible via a remote Model Context Protocol server or a local command-line interface.

  • Over 900 cryptocurrency spot trading pairs
  • Eligible U.S. futures products
  • S&P 500 stocks and USDC to USD conversion

Among these, stock and derivatives features remain subject to customer eligibility and regulatory restrictions.

API allows transfers but not external withdrawals

Coinbase states that agents, after obtaining API permissions, can transfer assets between authorized Coinbase portfolios but cannot withdraw assets to external blockchain addresses. Users can also revoke app access permissions in their Coinbase security settings.

This means that Coinbase currently offers something more akin to an AI trading account with permission isolation, rather than a general-purpose bank account with full control over funds.

The x402 payment is still pending launch.

Coinbase is also developing the x402 payment protocol. The protocol aims to enable humans or machines to pay directly for online resources when initiating an HTTP request, without going through traditional checkout or subscription processes.

The company stated that its developer platform has processed over 100 million x402 payments on Base and Solana. However, this figure reflects the volume of payment activity and does not directly indicate the actual number of unique users or autonomous agents.

Under the current plan, Coinbase for Agents will later support AI agents paying directly for research content, data APIs, and computing resources, but the company has not yet announced a specific launch date.

Additional information: An independent study published in July 2026 identified rule violations by 15 x402 service providers, with potential risks including asset theft, unauthorized service usage, and Gas abuse. Researchers stated that the affected providers, including Coinbase, have acknowledged these findings and implemented mitigation measures.
