CoinDesk reports:

Altitude and Matera will demonstrate a new application of the ANSI X9.150 QR code payment standard at Money20/20 USA, taking place in Las Vegas from October 18 to 21. This proof of concept shows how businesses can complete payments directly from invoices using structured, digitally signed payment requests: verifying the payment instruction in Altitude Bill Pay, settling the payment in USDC on Solana, and updating the payment status back to the invoicing application.

This demonstration is part of a broader industry effort to showcase how X9.150 enables interoperability between different financial platforms and payment methods. The collaboration between Altitude and Matera brings this standard to life by connecting established enterprise software with stablecoin payments.

Make payment information more reliable

As financial processes become increasingly automated, the accuracy and authenticity of payment instructions have become more critical. Companies typically receive invoices in PDF format, extract payment details, and then re-enter this information into other systems. Each step carries risks of errors, inconsistencies, or tampering.

X9.150, released in July 2026 by the Accredited Standards Committee X9 (X9), the U.S. standards-setting body for the financial industry, is the first U.S. national standard for secure, interoperable QR code payments. The standard provides a common framework for exchanging structured payment requests and notifications among participating applications; digital signatures enable compatible applications to verify the origin of requests and detect any alterations to the signed content. This framework supports multiple payment methods and service providers, reducing the need for separate, proprietary experiences.

Matera is a banking and payments technology company and one of over 70 institutions involved in developing the X9.150 standard. Altitude, a global business account built on stablecoin infrastructure, is bringing this technology to enterprises worldwide through its bill payment process. Together, the two companies are establishing a new standard of trust in business payments by embedding verification mechanisms directly into financial information flows.

Matera’s North American co-founder and CEO, Carlos Netto, said: “When people hear ‘payment QR code,’ they think of scanning a phone at the checkout counter. But here, no one is scanning anything—the invoice arrives as a file, and the accounts payable system reads it. Invoices and one-time bills make up the bulk of actual payments made by businesses and households, and these payments have long relied on manual processing. This is exactly the problem this standard aims to solve.”

From invoice to verified payment

At Money20/20, two companies will demonstrate the complete "invoice to payment" workflow in enterprise bill payment processes.

The process begins when the payer uploads a PDF invoice containing an X9.150 QR code to Altitude Bill Pay. Altitude reads the QR code to retrieve the payment request digitally signed by the billing application and verifies its origin and integrity. The invoice and payee details are then automatically populated for the payer to review and approve. Upon authorization, the payment is settled using USDC on Solana, and a notification is sent back to the billing application to update the invoice status to "paid."

This demo integrates three capabilities into a single workflow: standardizing payment information, pre-authorization verification, and settlement through a stablecoin infrastructure.

Verifying the signature of a payment request does not imply that the underlying invoice is legitimate or should be paid. Businesses remain responsible for reviewing and authorizing payments themselves.

Moving toward more interoperable enterprise payments

This demo shows how shared standards connect applications across different stages of financial transactions—from invoice creation to payment execution and status feedback. By structuring and validating payment information, X9.150 reduces manual data entry, improves consistency between systems, and gives businesses greater assurance regarding received instructions.

As businesses further automate their financial processes, the reliability of this information becomes increasingly important. Stronger verification mechanisms provide a more solid foundation for the system, enable clearer information for human review, and maintain the company’s control over payment authorization.

This workflow is currently demonstrated as a proof of concept; whether it will be rolled out more widely is yet to be determined.
