Andreessen Horowitz’s cryptocurrency arm, a16z crypto, has raised $2.2 billion for its fifth fund, stating that the market is now moving toward real applications rather than speculation.
This new fund is smaller than a16z crypto’s record-breaking $4.5 billion fourth fund raised in 2022, which remains the largest cryptocurrency venture fund to date. a16z crypto’s communications partner, Paul Cafiero, told The Block that the firm intentionally reduced the fund size because “a shorter fundraising cycle allows us to keep pace with the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency landscape.” a16z crypto’s previous funds include $2.2 billion in its third fund in 2021, $515 million in its second fund in 2020, and its inaugural $350 million fund in 2018.
KuCoin declined to comment on when the fundraising campaign would begin, when the fifth fund would close, or whether the fourth fund has been fully deployed or still has remaining funds, citing compliance reasons.
In addition to the new fund, a16z Crypto said it has promoted its chief technology officer, Eddy Lazzarin, to fourth general partner, alongside Chris Dixon, Ali Yahya, and Guy Wuollet.

The launch of the new fund comes amid increased volatility in the cryptocurrency market since last year's peak. Bitcoin is currently trading at approximately $80,900. a16z Crypto says that although the market is currently in a relatively calm phase, adoption is growing.
The company points out that one of the most obvious examples of the increasing usage of stablecoins is the sustained growth in its adoption. It also highlights the rising usage of the term blockchain in capital markets, including perpetual futures for price discovery, prediction markets for information sharing, and on-chain lending in the stablecoin credit market.
a16z crypto says: “A new financial system is emerging—it runs continuously, settles nearly instantly, has near-zero costs, and is accessible to anyone with an internet connection.”
Regarding regulation, the company pointed to the GENIUS Act as an example of clearer rules and stronger safeguards, noting that further progress in regulation would help attract more institutional participants to the market. When asked if they expected the Clarifying Act, Cafiero expressed that, regarding the cryptocurrency market structure bill expected to pass this year, “we still remain hopeful and optimistic.”
It is worth noting that the fifth fund will continue to focus exclusively on the cryptocurrency sector and will not expand into related fields such as artificial intelligence or robotics. Caffaro stated that the fund is “100% committed to investing in cryptocurrency entrepreneurs at all stages,” and added that this commitment also applies to the industry sector.
a16z crypto said: “The founders we’re supporting with this $2.2 billion fund are focusing on underappreciated but high-impact stages of the development cycle: turning new infrastructure into products people use every day. All major computing platforms ultimately operate this way—and cryptocurrency will too.”
a16z's cryptocurrency fund has previously invested in companies and projects such as Coinbase, Uniswap, Solana, Kalshi, Anchorage Digital, and Phantom. It is currently unclear whether the fifth fund has begun making investments, and Cafiero declined to comment.
Activity in cryptocurrency venture capital funds has become more selective in recent years, with greater focus on projects demonstrating product-market fit and profit potential. However, fundraising has become more difficult for both. Funding still flows to startups and established companies, as well as top-tier founders.
Earlier this week, Haun Ventures raised $1 billion for its second fund to support startups in financial infrastructure and the AI agent economy. Tengzi Paradigm recently completed its fourth fund raise of $650 million. The firm is reportedly seeking up to $1.5 billion to establish a larger fund focused on expanding into areas such as artificial intelligence and robotics. Blockchain Capital is also said to be planning to raise approximately $700 million through two funds.
