CLARITY Act Vote Fails as 10-Year U.S. Treasury Yield Tops 5%, BTC Falls Below 76K
🔍 Core Insights
  • 📊 Market Overview
    • The failed CLARITY Act vote was the direct catalyst for the overnight market selloff, while elevated Treasury yields and oil prices further weighed on risk appetite. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield rose to around 5.05% intraday, its highest level since 2007, while Brent crude closed at around $108.75 per barrel (+2.9%). The S&P 500 fell 0.4% to 7,585.73, the Nasdaq dropped 0.8%, and the Dow declined 0.6%. The U.S. Senate’s cloture motion on the CLARITY Act then received only 50 votes in favor and 49 against, falling short of the 60 votes required to advance the bill. Crypto markets came under pressure, with BTC briefly falling to around 74.9K and ETH dropping to around 2.41K. In the short term, BTC has shifted from “retesting 80K” to breaking below 76K and retesting support around 75K. Crypto-related equities also came under pressure, with Coinbase and Circle falling as much as around 10% intraday. The key level to watch today is whether 74K–75K can attract buying support, while 76.5K–78K has become the first resistance zone. The Fed’s rate decision and dot plot early tomorrow morning Beijing time will determine whether macro conditions continue to pressure risk-asset valuations.
    • BTC: $75,643.9 (-3.28%); ETH: $2,398.22 (-4.68%); NASDAQ: 25,981.57 (-0.78%); S&P 500: 7,585.73 (-0.45%); Fear & Greed Index: 51 (previous: 69) (Data as of 2026-09-16 00:00 UTC)
  • 🧠 Market Insights
    • With CLARITY stalled, the market has begun unwinding trades built around expectations of clearer U.S. crypto regulation. CLARITY was intended to further clarify whether digital assets fall under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission or the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, as well as the regulatory classification of certain tokens. As a result, assets more sensitive to U.S. regulatory developments were among the first to come under pressure. XRP fell nearly 12% at one point, largely because it remains highly sensitive to changes in expectations around U.S. regulatory classification and securities-related policy. Coinbase also fell significantly more than BTC, as its trading, custody, and yield-related businesses are directly affected by the U.S. regulatory framework, making the impact of CLARITY’s setback more direct on its valuation. Prediction markets reacted even more sharply, with Polymarket odds of CLARITY becoming law this year falling from around 30% before the vote to single digits. In the short term, the market has shifted from trading the expectation that “a regulatory framework is about to be finalized” back to waiting for the next legislative push.
    • ETF flows had only just started to recover before running into 5% Treasury yields and renewed Fed tightening pressure. From September 8 to 11, U.S. spot BTC ETFs recorded around $463 million in cumulative net outflows over four consecutive trading days, before returning to around $160 million in net inflows on September 14. ETH ETFs also recorded around $121 million in net inflows on the same day, suggesting that institutional investors had begun rebuilding exposure. However, with the 10-year Treasury yield breaking above 5% and expectations for a 25-basis-point Fed rate hike rising rapidly, risk assets are again facing pressure from higher interest rates. Tonight, the key question is not only whether the Fed raises rates by 25 basis points, but also what its latest rate projections show and whether Warsh signals further hikes ahead. Another key indicator will be whether ETF flows turn into sustained outflows again following the CLARITY setback. If ETFs continue to provide buying support, this correction is more likely to reflect policy and leverage shocks; if flows turn persistently negative again, downside pressure could intensify.
