Mastercard Brings Stablecoin Settlement to the Global Network Mastercard has announced a new infrastructure expansion enabling the use of stablecoins for card transaction settlement. Under this initiative, more than five regulated stablecoins—including USDC, PYUSD, and RLUSD—will be usable as settlement instruments across Ethereum, Solana, and several other blockchains, with intraday settlement options added, including weekends and holidays. The practical implications of this move are as notable as its technical dimensions. Traditionally, settlement within legacy payment infrastructure is confined to banking hours, and cross-border transactions complicate liquidity management. Stablecoin settlement via blockchain can eliminate these constraints, allowing companies and fintech partners to transition to digital asset-based payment flows while leveraging the same Mastercard infrastructure. On a broader scale, this step serves as a concrete indication that, at a time when stablecoin regulatory frameworks are becoming clearer, the global payment infrastructure is technically opening its doors to digital assets. The picture emerging is clear: while regulators write the rules, the industry is building the infrastructure.
