Day 20 of #AdventOfEth - RPC Endpoints RPC endpoints are how applications talk to Ethereum and other EVM chains. Every balance check, transaction submission, log query, or contract call ultimately goes through an RPC endpoint An RPC endpoint exposes a standard JSON-RPC interface that lets applications read blockchain state and submit transactions. While the protocol is standardised, the infrastructure behind these endpoints varies significantly. Most applications don’t run their own nodes. Instead, they rely on third-party RPC providers that operate and maintain full nodes, handle scaling, caching, rate limiting, and protect against abuse. This keeps application infrastructure simple but introduces dependencies on external providers. RPC performance and reliability directly impact user experience. Slow responses, dropped requests, or rate limits can make an application feel broken, even when the underlying chain is healthy. As usage scales, RPC infrastructure becomes a bottleneck. This is why many teams use multiple providers, intelligent routing, or custom filtering to balance cost, latency, and reliability. RPC endpoints aren’t part of the execution layer, but they’re a critical access layer. Without them, applications can’t observe state or interact with the chain at all.
