Back in previous bull markets, people would build a basket of 10 to 15 altcoins and bet that projects like $DOGE, $LINK, $LTC, $ICP, $ARB or newer L1s would eventually have their moment. That market feels very different now. Since memecoins exploded, a huge amount of retail attention has shifted away from “utility” and toward attention, community and speculation. Instead of 20 altcoins running together, we may only see three or four major alts truly outperform while capital rotates aggressively through memes. So what actually changed? Maybe crypto wasn’t made for memecoins. Maybe memecoins simply became the purest version of what this market rewards: attention + liquidity + community. And if that’s true, does the technology behind most altcoins even matter as much anymore?
