U.S. Bitcoin Spot ETFs Turn to Net Outflows Year-to-Date A clear shift in capital flows has emerged in the U.S. cryptocurrency ETF market. The 12 U.S.-listed Bitcoin spot ETFs recorded a combined net outflow of $1.28 billion in the first week of November—the largest weekly outflow since late June. As a result, year-to-date net flows have turned negative, reaching approximately $914.1 million in outflows. This marks the reversal of the cumulative net inflows accumulated throughout the year, sending a signal too significant for market participants who have prioritized Bitcoin demand through spot ETFs to ignore. On a daily basis, outflows persisted throughout the week except for Wednesday. Outflows totaled $398.6 million on Monday, $115.6 million on Tuesday, $430.2 million on Thursday, and $411.9 million on Friday—amounts that could not be offset by Wednesday’s $74.6 million inflow. Notably, BlackRock’s IBIT saw a $400 million outflow on Friday, accounting for the majority of that day’s total outflows. Meanwhile, Fidelity’s FBTC recorded a $42.8 million inflow on the same day, suggesting investors may be rebalancing holdings across funds rather than exiting the asset class entirely. Spot ETFs have been closely watched as a window into institutional and advisor-driven capital flows, given their ability to provide access to cryptocurrencies through traditional brokerage accounts. Since the launch of Bitcoin spot ETFs in the U.S., changes in ETF asset levels have become as critical as price movements in gauging market sentiment. This week, total assets held by the 12 Bitcoin ETFs declined to $95.9 billion—equivalent to approximately 6.3% of Bitcoin’s total market capitalization. As ETF-held exposure has grown, outflows have exerted an increasingly pronounced psychological impact on price movements. The deterioration is not limited to Bitcoin. Ethereum spot ETFs also posted a net outflow of $365.3 million for the week, marking their sixth consecutive week of net outflows. Since late September, cumulative outflows have reached approximately $2.02 billion. Selling pressure continued across multiple days: $139.8 million on Monday, $1 billion on Thursday, and $93.2 million on Friday. BlackRock’s ETHA alone saw a $90.8 million outflow on Friday—a move emblematic of broader weakness across Ethereum ETFs. Solana spot ETFs and Hyperliquid-related ETFs also recorded five consecutive weeks of net outflows. Although their scale is smaller than Bitcoin or Ethereum, these outflows suggest that investors are increasingly reducing exposure to less liquid risk assets first. Solana ETFs saw a net outflow of $26.3 million for the week, while Hyperliquid ETFs recorded $15.6 million in net outflows. This capital outflow is not confined to the cryptocurrency market alone. Multiple macroeconomic factors are simultaneously influencing sentiment: declines in U.S. equities and tech stocks, shifting policy expectations following the U.S. midterm elections, and overheating around AI-related investments. Bitcoin and Ethereum were trading at around $75,000 and $2,200 respectively by weekend close, with growing concern that ETF outflows are weighing on upward price momentum. However, ETF outflows do not necessarily signal a permanent loss of long-term demand. Multiple factors could be at play—including short-term profit-taking, risk management, tax-related adjustments, or fund reallocations. What matters most is the fact that Bitcoin spot ETFs have now shifted from positive to negative year-to-date flows. The key question ahead is whether this represents a temporary correction or the beginning of a broader reassessment of institutional allocations to cryptocurrencies.
