A long-awaited rebound—why is everything flowing into AI? The real reason crypto is being left behind. Today’s market presents an odd scene: Last week, the Nasdaq dropped nearly 4.5%, shaking AI and semiconductor stocks. Yet on Monday, those losses were reversed with a strong rebound. Stocks like NVDA, AMD, AVGO, and Micron led the rally, and the S&P 500 heatmap turned green across the IT sector. But crypto, on the same day, remained relatively weak. Bitcoin barely held onto modest gains near $82,000, while Ethereum, Solana, and XRP saw only slight recoveries. The sense that “crypto is weak again” while big tech rebounds isn’t just coincidence—it’s structural. This divergence isn’t simply a timing issue. AI stocks have earnings and growth narratives to back them. Last week’s pullback stemmed from doubts: “Is AI capex overdone? Can it truly generate returns?” But even though those concerns haven’t been fully resolved, the market doesn’t view the AI story as “completely broken.” That’s why buying pressure flowed into the hardest-hit names, fueling the rebound. Slightly eased oil prices and bond yields, along with better-than-expected Chinese data, also helped revive risk appetite. Crypto is different. It generates no earnings, no cash flow, and is far more sensitive to interest rates and liquidity. The U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have recorded sustained net outflows recently, with institutional capital continuing to exit rather than enter. Leverage remains far below levels seen before last year’s massive liquidations. As a result, even in this risk-on environment, capital is prioritizing AI—leaving crypto with little momentum to follow. The market is currently testing whether AI is a bubble. This week’s earnings reports from Meta and Tesla will be key indicators. If results meet expectations or reinforce confidence in AI capex, AI concentration could intensify further. Conversely, if concerns over capex profitability resurface, this rebound could prove short-lived. For crypto to truly keep pace in this trend, we need either: a more accommodative interest rate environment, renewed inflows into ETFs, or an independent catalyst unrelated to AI. Right now, none of these are clearly in play. Today’s rebound isn’t really a broad market recovery—it’s more accurately a correction of last week’s excessive selloff in AI stocks. So while it may feel like “a long-awaited rebound,” the true protagonist remains AI. Crypto is once again struggling to keep up on the sidelines—and this dynamic is likely to persist for the foreseeable future.
