Crude Could Breach $70 Pivot vs. Gas Holding $4 The remainder of 2026 for the energy sector may be determined by whether WTI crude oil and January US natural gas can stay above key supports around $70 a barrel and $4 per million British thermal units. My bias is that gas is more likely to recover from its threshold than crude, with broad implications for energy deflation vs. inflation. What does the leader of the world's largest energy producer -- and net exporter -- need to help his party in midterm elections? The US has an increasing abundance of crude oil, liquid fuels, natural gas and grains, and affordability is a top election issue. Roughly $70 is crude's 20-year high-volume price. January gas at about $4.16 on July 31 may be too low for a typical cold-weather scare, and $4 is a key pivot and round-number support following the life-of-contract high near $5.65 in 1Q.
