BSC has achieved 450-millisecond block times, yet BNB Chain still decided to build a new L1. The new chain will not issue a new token; gas, staking, and governance will continue to use BNB. CZ summarized it in one sentence: “Multiple chains, one coin.” Why start over? High-frequency trading, on-chain order books, and AI agents demand higher stability and predictability in execution. The new chain plans to decouple transaction ordering from execution, eliminate the global mempool, and replace even the underlying storage and execution clients. Such a transformation is nearly impossible to achieve through conventional upgrades on BSC, which already hosts a vast amount of assets and applications. Behind these technical choices lies a business that has already grown substantial. Hyperliquid generated approximately $687 million in revenue over the past 12 months, almost entirely from perpetual trading. The competition among exchanges to attract market makers and trading volume has extended to the underlying execution environment. The new chain will continue to revolve around BNB, but how much additional demand it can generate ultimately depends on how many applications and transactions it can attract. The mainnet is currently planned for early 2027, with a native cross-chain bridge still under development. From low-latency technical trade-offs to competition in perpetual trading markets, this article outlines the rationale behind BNB Chain’s decision to build a new L1.
