ZEC is now a top altcoin to watch after surging 2,300% to $1,023 on September 4, 2026. The jump pushed Zcash into the top 10 largest cryptos by market cap. ZEC gained 20% in 24 hours, with $2.3 billion in open interest and $34.5 million in short liquidations. Grayscale’s Zcash trust conversion to ZCSH ETF added fuel to the rally. Traders are eyeing top altcoins for next moves.

Zcash has pushed into cryptocurrency’s top 10 after a dramatic rally briefly carried ZEC above $1,000, while a surge in leveraged trading raises the stakes for what happens next.

ZEC gained roughly 20% over 24 hours and traded as high as $1,023 Friday, lifting its market capitalization toward $17 billion. CoinMarketCap currently ranks Zcash as the 10th-largest cryptocurrency, with ZEC trading around $983 and a market capitalization near $16.6 billion.

The move extends an extraordinary run. ZEC has gained roughly 94% over the past month and more than 2,300% over the past year, transforming a long-established privacy coin into one of the strongest-performing large crypto assets.

But the spot price is only part of the story.

$2.3B derivatives market raises the stakes

Open interest in ZEC futures has climbed to about 2.3 million ZEC, worth roughly $2.3 billion at current prices.

That is equivalent to around 14% of Zcash’s entire market capitalization, an unusually large derivatives footprint that shows how aggressively traders are positioning around the rally.

The latest move punished bearish traders particularly hard.

Approximately $36.6 million of leveraged ZEC positions were liquidated over the past 24 hours, including roughly $34.5 million in shorts. That means bearish positions accounted for about 94% of reported liquidations.

1-year move+2,300%+

Short liquidations can amplify an existing rally because traders forced out of bearish positions must buy ZEC to close them, adding another source of demand.

Grayscale gives ZEC a new Wall Street route

The surge also follows a major change in how U.S. investors can access Zcash.

Grayscale converted its long-running Zcash trust into The Zcash ETF, with the SEC prospectus confirming the product’s new name and structure in late August. Its shares trade under the ZCSH ticker, creating a regulated brokerage-market route for investors seeking ZEC exposure.

That institutional catalyst has been building for weeks.

ZEC had already rallied after Grayscale’s amended ETF filing detailed the planned NYSE Arca listing and 2.5% management fee, pushing Zcash back toward price levels last seen during the 2018 cycle. ETF progress became one of the clearest catalysts behind the latest phase of the rally.

Grayscale has also published an aggressive long-term scenario suggesting ZEC could theoretically reach around $8,100 if Zcash eventually captured 10% of Bitcoin’s market capitalization. That is a scenario rather than a forecast, but it shows how institutional narratives around privacy have changed as ZEC’s valuation grows. Grayscale’s ZEC scenario

The rebound is particularly notable because Zcash suffered a severe setback only months ago when disclosure of an Orchard shielded-pool vulnerability triggered a decline of more than 30%. Developers subsequently patched the issue and completed the Ironwood security upgrade.

ZEC’s entry into the top 10 therefore marks more than a one-day price spike.

But with $2.3 billion of futures positions now stacked around a roughly $17 billion asset, the same leverage that helped accelerate the rally could make the next reversal equally violent.
