Zcash Targets January for Quantum-Resistant Transparent Payments

Zcash is positioning itself as one of the altcoins to watch with plans to launch quantum-resistant transparent payments in January 2026. The update will introduce hash-based signature opcodes to counter quantum threats, though activation remains pending. The move follows concerns from Ethereum researcher Justin Drake about AI-assisted attacks. Transparent ZEC transactions will initially benefit, while shielded payments remain at risk. The support level for Zcash’s security upgrades could influence its market position in the coming months.

Zcash developers plan to add post-quantum signature support to the privacy-focused network in January, according to an engineering post from Zakura, one of the teams that builds and operates the Zcash node software. The change would introduce hash-based signature opcodes designed to resist quantum computers, though no network activation date has been confirmed.

“Our team plans for post-quantum signature opcodes to land in Zcash in January,” Zakura engineer Roman Akhtariev wrote in the engineering post. The timeline follows a warning from Ethereum researcher Justin Drake, who urged holders to prepare a “bunker mode” because AI-assisted advances could theoretically break today’s wallet signatures “in months, not years” in a worst-case scenario.

What the January Plan Adds

The opcodes would let Zcash verify hash-based signatures built on the WOTS scheme, a way to prove permission to spend without relying on the elliptic-curve keys most blockchains use today. That matters because a powerful quantum computer could, in principle, break today’s elliptic-curve signatures. A spender publishes a signature the network checks with hashes, digital fingerprints derived from secret data, so a future breakthrough against current keys would not automatically defeat the replacement.

The first version covers Zcash’s transparent payments, which work much like bitcoin. Roughly seven in 10 coins, about 11.96 million of the 16.98 million ZEC issued, sat in the transparent pool on Thursday, Oct. 8, according to ZecStats data compiled by CoinDesk. The plan also arrives alongside address rotation and a private lookup tool designed to stop wallets from revealing which addresses belong to the same user.

Why the ‘Bunker Mode’ Warning Moved the Timeline

The work gained urgency after Drake’s viral warning that AI could find a shortcut through the mathematics protecting bitcoin and ether wallets. ZEC closed around $1,185 that day, down about 11% over the week, leading a drop among major cryptocurrencies after the post spread on X.

What the Plan Still Doesn’t Protect

The January target does not yet cover shielded payments, the privacy feature that defines Zcash and conceals senders, recipients and amounts. Zcash’s own quantum-recovery design warns that an attacker who obtains a recipient’s address could save encrypted payment records now and try to decrypt them after a future mathematical breakthrough, a “harvest now, decrypt later” risk. Shielded transactions still require separate safeguards that have not been specified, leaving the network’s most distinctive use case waiting longest for protection.

What to Watch Next

No network activation date has been set, and January is a development target rather than a confirmed upgrade. The transparent-side tooling is further along: an experimental “Private queries” setting is already available in the Vizor wallet, with a broader rollout expected in the near term. Zcash’s timeline sits well ahead of Ethereum’s own December 2029 quantum-resistance target, but the shielded pool remains the part of the network most exposed to a future breakthrough.
