Key takeaways
- Zcash falls nearly 6% ahead of NU7 decision
- Network upgrade targets threefold faster block production
- Analyst sees $1,650 upside but warns of $1,000 retest
Zcash (ZEC) fell nearly 6% on October 16, extending a volatile period for the privacy-focused cryptocurrency just days before developers make a crucial decision about its next network upgrade.
Historical market data shows ZEC declined from approximately $1,222 to $1,149 on Friday, reaching an intraday low near $1,133. The cryptocurrency subsequently recovered toward $1,160–$1,175 during October 17 trading.
The decline comes ahead of the October 20 decision on Zcash's NU7 upgrade, which could reduce block confirmation times by approximately two-thirds if activated on mainnet.
Zcash Price Falls as October 20 NU7 Decision Approaches
According to the official NU7 development timeline, Zcash developers are expected to decide on October 20 whether to proceed with mainnet activation and finalize the upgrade's activation height.
The tentative deployment date is November 5, although it remains subject to technical review and could change.
NU7 proposes reducing Zcash's target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, allowing new blocks to be produced approximately three times as frequently.
The upgrade would also disable legacy version 4 transactions and introduce a Network Sustainability Mechanism that temporarily removes approximately 60% of transaction fees from circulation before gradually returning them through mining rewards beginning in February 2031.
The changes could improve transaction confirmation speed without materially accelerating ZEC issuance.
The latest weakness contrasts with an earlier 5% rally, when traders positioned for the same upgrade amid short liquidations.
However, the October 20 milestone is not the upgrade itself. Developers must first determine whether testnet performance supports the proposed mainnet launch.
Zcash Price Prediction: Analyst Targets $1,650 Despite Selloff
The recent decline has not eliminated bullish expectations among technical analysts.
In an October 12 Zcash forecast, analyst Alejandro Arrieche suggested NU7 could support a recovery toward $1,650 if developers proceed with the upgrade.
That target represents approximately 44% upside from ZEC's October 16 closing price near $1,149.
However, Arrieche also warned that ZEC could revisit $1,000 before establishing a stronger recovery.
The uncertainty follows a steep correction from September's rally, when Zcash traded above $1,650.
Coinpaper previously reported the liquidation risks surrounding highly leveraged ZEC positions, which contributed to unusually sharp market movements.
For now, the $1,100–$1,150 region remains an important nearby price area after Friday's intraday decline.
A sustained recovery above $1,250 could suggest improving short-term momentum, while another decline below $1,100 would bring the analyst's $1,000 downside scenario closer.
Can NU7 Reverse Zcash's Recent Weakness?
The upcoming decision gives traders a specific event to watch, but a positive outcome would not guarantee an immediate rally.
Approval could reduce uncertainty around NU7's development schedule and reinforce the project's focus on faster private payments.
Conversely, an unexpected delay or technical setback could weaken sentiment among traders anticipating a November launch.
Importantly, Zcash's network upgrade does not directly create additional token demand. Its price impact would depend on investor expectations, actual network adoption and wider cryptocurrency market conditions.
With ZEC substantially below its September highs, the October 20 decision may become an important short-term catalyst.
Whether that leads toward $1,650 or another test of $1,000 will depend on both the upgrade's progress and buyers' ability to defend recent support levels.
