BlockBeats report: On June 3, the Zcash (ZEC) Foundation officially announced that independent security researcher Taylor Hornby discovered a critical reliability vulnerability in Zcash’s Orchard zero-knowledge proof circuit on May 29, which could permit double-spending within the Orchard pool. Within hours, ZODL core engineers confirmed the issue and initiated a fix; to buy time, they temporarily disabled Orchard operations via an emergency soft fork in Zebra 4.5.3 on the morning of June 2. Today, they activated the NU6.2 hard fork via Zebra 5.0.0—on Beijing time at 12:05 PM, the mainnet successfully upgraded at block height 3,364,600, re-enabling Orchard with the corrected circuit and permanently closing the vulnerability. This marks only the second time since Zcash’s 2016 launch that a security issue has triggered a protocol upgrade. No known exploitation occurred throughout the process; the network’s total supply guard mechanism confirmed the total supply remained intact, and user privacy, along with Sapling and transparent transactions, were unaffected.

Zcash (ZEC) executed the NU 6.2 hard fork on June 3 to address a critical vulnerability in the Orchard pool. A soft fork update (Zebra 4.5.3) was deployed on June 2 to temporarily disable the affected feature. The hard fork (Zebra 5.0.0) activated at block height 3,364,600, permanently sealing the vulnerability. The issue was identified by researcher Taylor Hornby on May 29 and confirmed by Zcash engineers. This is the second protocol fix since 2016, with no exploitation reported and no impact on supply.
