Zcash cofounder Eli Ben-Sasson says privacy and quantum security must be affordable and user-friendly to boost crypto adoption. He warned that high costs or complexity could hinder mass use. StarkWare tested quantum-resistant tech on Bitcoin, but the method remains costly. Zcash developers are working on the NU7 upgrade to cut block times. Grayscale announced a three-for-one share split for its ZCSH ETF. A recent security breach in another chain highlights the need for stronger defenses.

Summary

  • Eli Ben-Sasson believes privacy and post-quantum security could become standard crypto features if developers make them affordable and easy to use.
  • StarkWare tested quantum-resistant protection on Bitcoin, while Zcash’s planned NU7 upgrade targets faster blocks without adding post-quantum security features.
  • Grayscale plans a three-for-one ZCSH share split that will increase share counts without changing the total value of investors’ holdings.

Zcash cofounder Eli Ben-Sasson believes privacy and post-quantum security could become standard crypto features if people can use them affordably. According to Ben-Sasson’s X post, both features must be easy to use and available at a low cost. His prediction puts the experience of ordinary users alongside the technical work needed to strengthen blockchain networks.

Privacy tools can limit what others learn from transactions on a public blockchain. Meanwhile, post-quantum methods aim to protect digital assets against attacks from sufficiently powerful future quantum computers.

Those goals present different challenges, but Ben-Sasson sees usability as essential to both. People may struggle to adopt stronger protection if it requires complex account changes or expensive transactions.

He has also raised a question about what happens when an existing network moves toward post-quantum security. Developers must assess the network’s cryptography and explain any steps users need to take with their funds.

Bitcoin Test Reveals Practical Barriers to Quantum Protection

StarkWare, which Ben-Sasson cofounded, reported a quantum-resistant transaction on the Bitcoin mainnet in August. The experimental method worked without changing Bitcoin’s consensus rules, giving researchers a live test of one possible defense.

However, StarkWare stressed that the transaction did not make Bitcoin itself quantum-safe. Its method protected a specific output, while the wider network still relies on cryptography that may face future risks.

The company estimated a cost of several hundred dollars for the method. Moreover, the unusual transaction required a direct route to a miner instead of passing through Bitcoin’s ordinary mempool.

These limitations show why a working demonstration does not automatically provide an accessible option for everyday users. Ben-Sasson’s call for lower costs therefore applies to the path from technical research to wider use.

Zcash Prepares Faster Blocks Under NU7

Zcash developers are separately preparing NU7, a network upgrade that targets faster block production. They have scheduled testnet activation for October 6 and are targeting November 5 for mainnet activation.

NU7 would reduce the target interval between blocks from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. It would also disable version 4 transactions and introduce changes linked to the network’s sustainability mechanism.

Developers plan to decide on mainnet activation on October 20, using results from the testnet rollout. NU7 does not introduce the post-quantum protection described in Ben-Sasson’s broader prediction.

Grayscale Sets Three-for-One Split for Zcash ETF

Another Zcash development concerns investors rather than the network’s technology. Grayscale has scheduled a three-for-one share split for its Zcash ETF, ZCSH, less than a month after its August debut.

According to the SEC filing, shareholders of record at market close on September 28 will receive two additional shares per share. Grayscale plans to distribute them after market close on September 29, with split-adjusted trading expected on September 30.

The adjustment will triple each holder’s share count and reduce the value of each share proportionally. Consequently, the split itself will not increase the value of investors’ holdings or the fund’s underlying assets.

Ben-Sasson’s forecast, the NU7 schedule, and ZCSH’s split concern distinct parts of the Zcash ecosystem. His central claim remains a prediction that privacy and quantum protection will need to become affordable and manageable for users.
