Huo Xing Finance reports that on July 30, according to market data, the USD/JPY pair experienced a sharp short-term decline that continued, with a cumulative drop of over 400 points and a daily loss of 3%, currently trading at 158.5—the largest move since the Japanese government intervened in the market earlier this year. Market participants speculate that Japanese authorities may once again intervene to support the yen, as the Bank of Japan is set to announce its interest rate decision tomorrow. Previously, the yen had been steadily weakening, briefly falling to its lowest level in nearly 40 years. Although the Japanese government conducted a record ¥11.73 trillion (approximately $73.2 billion) in foreign exchange interventions between April 28 and May 27 to prevent USD/JPY from falling below the 160 level, the yen has continued to face downward pressure. According to data released by Japan’s Ministry of Finance, the funds used for recent FX interventions likely came from the sale of foreign securities holdings, including U.S. Treasuries.
