xAI's Grok Build Reaches Version 1.0 After 10-Week Beta Phase

xAI’s Grok Build hit version 1.0.0 on August 7, 2026, capping off one of the more aggressive beta cycles in the AI coding tool space. The terminal-based coding agent went from early beta to general release in about 10 weeks, logging roughly 100 updates along the way.

Grok Build first appeared in early beta on May 25, 2026, as a command-line AI agent designed to let developers interact directly with their codebases.

The 1.0 release brings a set of features that reflect the lessons learned from that compressed beta window. Dashboard summaries give developers a quick snapshot of project state. Enhanced UI and navigation make the terminal experience feel less like wrestling with raw output. Improved error recovery and permission handling address the kinds of rough edges that tend to surface when real users start pushing a tool beyond its demo-day scenarios.

Markdown support rounds out the update. Under the hood, the tool has evolved its model backbone as well. Early beta iterations relied on earlier xAI models, but by 1.0, Grok Build transitioned to the Grok 4.5 model.

On July 15, 2026, about halfway through the beta period, xAI open-sourced Grok Build under the Apache 2.0 license. Reported data breaches had prompted usage policy adjustments, and open-sourcing the codebase served a dual purpose: transparency as a trust-rebuilding exercise and community-driven development as a force multiplier.

Distribution also got a boost through the DigitalOcean Marketplace listing. It’s installable via command line for SuperGrok and X Premium+ subscribers, tying the tool into xAI’s existing subscription tiers.

Grok Build isn’t entering a quiet market. Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex CLI are both competing for the same developer mindshare. By going Apache 2.0, xAI is betting that community contributions and ecosystem lock-in will outweigh whatever revenue it might lose from keeping the code closed.
