Wintermute, a top crypto trading firm, has registered as a broker-dealer with FINRA and the SEC. The U.S. entity can now act as an AP for crypto ETFs and execute a market-making strategy. Using its own capital, Wintermute will trade and provide liquidity. CEO Evgeny Gaevoy noted the ongoing growth of digital markets. Bitcoin spot ETFs saw $381 million in net inflows in August. TA for crypto remains a key tool for tracking trends.

One of the top algorithmic trading firms and over-the-counter (OTC) desks in cryptocurrency, Wintermute, recently registered as a broker-dealer with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Up until now, Wintermute’s main reputation has been offering cryptocurrency liquidity on OTC markets, decentralized exchanges (DEXs), and centralized exchanges.

But now under U.S. securities laws, its U.S. entity can now lawfully engage in specific activities involving traditional securities.

Is this good news for the crypto ETF space?

With this registration, Wintermute will use its own funds to buy and sell securities, in contrast to a conventional broker that makes trades on behalf of customers.

Moreover, to provide liquidity and lessen trading friction, its main function will be market making, which involves continuously quoting buy and sell prices.

That said, one of the main advantages of the registration will be Wintermute becoming an Authorized Participant (AP) for exchange-traded products (ETPs), including crypto ETFs.

For context, APs produce and redeem ETF shares, enhancing market liquidity and assisting in maintaining crypto ETF prices in line with the worth of their underlying assets.

With the introduction of more crypto ETFs in the United States, Wintermute can support institutional trading to a greater extent.

Remarking on the same, Evgeny Gaevoy, Founder and CEO of Wintermute, said,

Our long-term conviction has always been that digital asset markets will evolve in more than one direction.

More developments from the crypto ETF space

This coincided with JPMorgan’s observation that, with rising competition, the initial spike in institutional interest in Hyperliquid [HYPE] ETFs may be waning.

At the same time, despite August being less than a week old, spot Bitcoin [BTC] ETFs have seen net inflows of over $381 million this month, the highest start to any month since April.

Final Summary

  • With the new registration, Wintermite’s U.S. entity can now lawfully engage in traditional securities.
  • Wintermute will also become an Authorized Participant (AP) for exchange-traded products, including crypto ETFs.
