New York Fed President John Williams said on October 14 that no rate hikes are needed in 2027 after one more increase this year. His remarks clash with market forecasts, which expect at least one hike in 2027. Williams stressed the need to track inflation data closely, predicting annual inflation will near the Fed’s 2% target by 2027. New York Federal Reserve President John Williams said Tuesday that he sees no reason for additional rate hikes in 2027 after one more increase this year. Williams said in an interview with Bloomberg News that one more rate hike may be appropriate. Williams said he currently sees no reason to believe the Fed would need to do more. However, Williams cautioned that forecasts into the new year would depend on incoming information. Williams said the economy faces many different influences and the Fed must keep watching the data.

Williams' comments place him at odds with market expectations and some other central bank members. Fed funds futures traders largely expect at least one rate increase in 2027, according to CME's FedWatch data as of Tuesday. Latest trading gave about 90% odds that the Fed overnight rate would end 2027 at least half a percentage point above today's level. Eight of the 18 Federal Open Market Committee members who submitted 2027 rate forecasts expect another increase after an additional hike this year. Williams remains aligned with the majority despite disagreeing with many committee members. Williams is a permanent voting member of the Federal Open Market Committee, which sets interest rates at each Fed policy meeting.

The Fed raised rates in September for the first time since 2023. Fed officials indicated plans for another hike in meeting minutes but did not clarify the timing. The central bank meets at the end of this month and again in December.

Williams said the Fed should examine underlying inflation trends amid price shocks tied to energy and artificial intelligence. Williams cautioned that energy prices continue to put upward pressure on overall inflation. Williams said energy prices could provide relief on an annual basis in the future. Williams said most tariff effects on price growth have already occurred.

Williams forecast that overall annual inflation in 2027 should be near the Fed's 2% target. The personal consumption expenditures price index, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, rose 3.4% over the 12 months through August. The index rose 3% over the same period when food and energy prices were excluded. Williams said disinflationary forces remain in place and have not fundamentally changed. Williams forecast that inflation would decline considerably next year.
