The White House is moving to expand its compliance framework for AI regulation to include open-source models. Currently, the framework requires federal safety testing for advanced models from U.S. labs, focusing on closed-source systems from companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI. Soon, open-source models that reach frontier capabilities—such as those comparable to GPT-5.6 or Mythos—will also be subject to pre-release reviews. Stablecoin regulation remains a separate but active priority for policymakers.

ChainThink reports that on August 13, according to WIRED citing sources, the Trump administration’s new AI guidelines will be revised to expand the regulatory scope for AI models.

This month, the White House announced it has developed an AI framework under which advanced AI models created by U.S. laboratories will undergo safety testing by the federal government before public release. The framework has not been made public, and there are currently no reported plans to do so.

Currently, this framework covers only proprietary models developed by companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI. A White House official revealed that, in the coming months, the framework is expected to also include open-source models;

Open-source models that achieve the same "cutting-edge" capabilities as Anthropic's Mythos-level models or OpenAI's GPT-5.6 will also be included in pre-release testing.
