Ethereum news emerged as Vitalik Buterin proposed EIP-8288 to expand the network’s support for multiple cryptographic algorithms. The proposal allows users to generate signatures locally and submit STARK proofs through an aggregator, eliminating the need for new precompiles. Buterin noted that lattice-based cryptography could still be utilized via precompiles if it proves secure against AI-based attacks. Starknet’s Eli Ben-Sasson previously argued that lattice-based methods are not yet mature enough to secure large assets and remain vulnerable to AI threats.

ChainCatcher report: Vitalik Buterin (@VitalikButerin) posted that the ideal path to support various cryptographic algorithms is through EIP-8288: users generate arbitrary signatures locally, prove them via STARK, and submit them to the chain through a STARK aggregator, eliminating the need for calldata on-chain and thus removing the necessity for Ethereum to add new precompiles. He also noted that if lattice-based cryptography is proven secure against AI attacks, it could still be integrated via precompiles in the future for use cases such as accounts and wallets. Previously, Starknet co-founder Eli Ben-Sasson opposed a16z’s views, arguing that lattice-based cryptography has rich mathematical structures vulnerable to AI attacks, and that its simplified versions based on module SIS have only existed since 2012 and lack sufficient maturity; he recommended waiting another 3–5 years for AI to thoroughly test its security before using it to custody large assets.
