Odaily Planet Daily report: Vitalik shared an article titled "Digital Minimalism" on X, in which he argues that as AI technology advances, people need to reevaluate their relationship with the digital world—不应被社交媒体算法、移动互联网和复杂的网站界面牵着走,而应主动决定何时、以何种方式使用数字工具。
In practice, Vitalik shared three experiments: First, he reduced direct use of X’s native interface and instead managed X, Bluesky, Farcaster, and Lens simultaneously through Firefly to minimize the impact of algorithmic recommendations on information consumption and attention. Second, he kept his phone in airplane mode by default for 100 consecutive days, connecting to the internet via Wi-Fi only when necessary, to reduce exposure of location data and cultivate habits of living offline. Additionally, he began reducing reliance on web interfaces for operations, opting instead to use command-line tools for tasks related to ENS, IPFS, and privacy protocols.
Vitalik believes that traditional websites and web applications not only pose privacy risks but also require users to re-trust their servers with every visit. In contrast, modular tools, local applications, and AI enable users to perform tasks that previously required programming knowledge, using natural language—reducing dependence on closed platforms and complex interfaces. He refers to this philosophy of actively controlling how digital tools are used as "digital minimalism," and argues that advancements in AI, offline applications, and software tools are making it possible for people to reduce their reliance on social media, the internet, and even web applications.
