ChainThink reports that on March 13, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published a public statement clarifying his relationship with the Future of Life Institute and his position on AI risk issues.
Vitalik stated that in 2021, he passively received a large amount of Dogecoin, including SHIB, which at one point had a paper value exceeding $1 billion. He immediately donated half to CryptoRelief and the other half to FLI, expecting the latter to cash out only $10 million to $25 million; however, FLI actually cashed out approximately $500 million. (The same applied to CryptoRelief.)
Vitalik stated that FLI subsequently underwent an internal strategic shift, making large-scale political action its primary approach, which differs significantly from its original direction. He expressed concern that using large pools of funds to drive political action could lead to unintended consequences and potentially evolve into authoritarian solutions—such as restricting open-source AI to elevate a single "correct" institution to dominance—posing serious backfire risks.
