Vitalik Buterin once again publicly emphasized that privacy remains a key direction for Ethereum. On X, he stated that he will not abandon privacy but will instead double down on it. This statement came after Ethereum elevated privacy to a technical priority.
Privacy has been prioritized in recent development efforts.
Over the past few months, Ethereum’s work on privacy has shifted from conceptual discussions to more concrete technical advancements. Public information indicates that key areas include wallet design, transaction inclusion mechanisms, private on-chain queries, and shielding solutions for ETH and ERC-20 transfers.
Buterin has previously listed privacy alongside censorship resistance, open source, and security as core properties of Ethereum that cannot be compromised. He also summarized these principles as "CROPS," emphasizing that privacy is not an auxiliary feature but a foundational component of cryptographic systems.
The roadmap begins to emphasize native privacy.
In May, Buterin outlined Ethereum’s path toward “native privacy,” mentioning directions such as account abstraction, nonce designs with keys, and improvements to the access layer. By August, he had listed “strong privacy” as one of the key changes in the current development roadmap.
He also called on the Ethereum Foundation to concentrate more resources on three key areas: censorship resistance, privacy, and security. This means that privacy is no longer just a topic of community discussion, but has entered a phase of more defined resource allocation.
Inclusion and shielding pools are areas of concern.
Ethereum’s current public blockchain structure allows users to view addresses, balances, and transaction histories, which inherently conflicts with privacy goals. Researchers are addressing this issue from two directions: transaction writing and protocol layer improvements.
One of the proposed solutions mentioned is FOCIL. Its goal is to increase the neutrality of transaction inclusion and reduce the ability of powerful block builders to refuse processing transactions from specific privacy protocols.
Another direction under discussion is the introduction of shielded pools at the protocol level for ETH and ERC-20 transfers. If such designs continue to advance, Ethereum’s future privacy capabilities may no longer rely solely on external tools but become more deeply embedded within the underlying network.
Buterin previously stated in public interviews that privacy is a foundational component of the cypherpunk movement and summarized it as part of "freedom." As related research continues to advance, privacy is evolving from a value proposition into specific development tasks for Ethereum.
