The U.S. SEC is investigating the AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness, having issued subpoenas to banks handling its trading and financing. The fund, which previously concentrated on AI-related assets, experienced a decline in assets following a market downturn in July. Situational Awareness stated it anticipated regulatory scrutiny and will cooperate. Traders employing value investing in crypto often rely on support and resistance levels to time their entries, but increased market scrutiny can disrupt even well-planned strategies.
CoinDesk reports:

According to The New York Times, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating the AI-themed hedge fund Situational Awareness and has issued subpoenas to banks that do business with it. The investigation focuses on institutions providing trade monitoring and financing access to the fund. Regulators have not yet alleged any wrongdoing by the fund.

The subpoena is directed to the cooperating bank.

This fund once attracted Wall Street’s attention due to its heavy focus on AI-related assets. Its founder, Leopold Aschenbrenner, previously worked at OpenAI. As interest in AI trading surged, Situational Awareness expanded rapidly for a time; however, following a pullback in AI stocks at the end of July, the fund’s assets shrank significantly.

Reports indicate that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has requested that relevant banks retain information related to the fund. When asked about the progress of the investigation, Situational Awareness did not respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment, but told The New York Times that it is not surprising for a high-profile fund to come under scrutiny, and that the company will cooperate with regulatory requirements.

AI sector pullback impacts funds

Based on the disclosed information, this investigation primarily focuses on two types of institutions: banks responsible for overseeing fund transactions, and banks that provide funding or payment channels for the funds. At this stage, public information has not indicated that the investigation has entered the enforcement or charging phase.

Prior to this, the investment strategy had heavily concentrated on the AI sector. The article noted that while this approach previously generated significant growth, it also made the fund more sensitive to fluctuations in a single theme. After AI stocks declined at the end of July, the fund’s book value evaporated by billions of dollars.

Wall Street AI trading cools down

Situational Awareness was once regarded as a leading example of Wall Street’s pursuit of AI-driven trading. Now, following simultaneous asset drawdowns and regulatory investigations, the fund’s position has rapidly weakened.

For the market, this event signifies not just pressure on a single fund, but also the beginning of a stricter evaluation of performance and compliance for the AI investment boom. Institutions that previously relied on high-growth narratives to attract attention may now find it harder to sustain market confidence solely through thematic hype.
