Odaily Planet Daily reports: On July 31, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced a civil forfeiture action seeking to seize 47,461.73111 USDT, valued at approximately $47,000. Prosecutors stated that the scammers tricked victims into withdrawing cash from banks and depositing it via cryptocurrency ATMs.
Prosecutors stated that a resident of Ware, Massachusetts, was targeted after a pop-up on their computer prompted them to contact customer support, who claimed their bank account had been compromised and demanded that funds be transferred to government custody. Investigators later traced part of the funds to the same cryptocurrency wallet and linked it to four other victims of similar scams.
On June 11, the U.S. House of Representatives introduced the Stop Crypto ATM Scams Act, which proposes a daily transaction limit of $2,000 and a total deposit limit of $10,000 for new customers during their first 14 days, and requires crypto ATM operators to provide fraud warnings, refund arrangements, and enhanced anti-money laundering and recordkeeping obligations.
