The U.S. Department of Commerce plans to allocate up to $389 million in R&D funding to four companies, sourced from the $10 billion semiconductor fund approved by Congress in 2022. The U.S. government will receive a minority equity stake with no control or voting rights.
Helion received up to $1.75 billion to develop high-voltage power semiconductors for nuclear fusion power generation; Commonwealth Fusion Systems received up to $850 million to research semiconductor devices related to nuclear fusion; Vertical Semiconductor received up to $730 million to advance vertical gallium nitride power semiconductors for AI data centers; and Sibelco received up to $560 million to develop ultra-pure quartz purification technology for semiconductors.
The Secretary of Commerce stated that the subsidies aim to accelerate domestic semiconductor innovation and strengthen the national energy and power supply chain.
