The US Blockchain Association is advocating for bipartisan digital asset tax reform, urging updated rules to simplify compliance and foster blockchain innovation. It has launched TaxClarityforAmerica.com to track progress and increase awareness. The group has proposed small-value exemptions, clear guidelines for mining and staking, and privacy-conscious reporting standards. The House Ways and Means Committee and Senator Steve Daines have introduced related legislation. A legislative window remains open following the November 3 election.

ChainCatcher report: The Blockchain Association, a U.S. blockchain industry group, has published a statement saying it has sent letters to congressional leadership urging Congress to advance prudent, bipartisan legislation on digital asset taxation. The association has also launched TaxClarityforAmerica.com to help the public understand the principles, track congressional progress, and contact their representatives.

The association stated that approximately 67 million Americans hold and use digital assets, but the current tax system is designed for a bygone era, leading to taxpayer uncertainty, excessive compliance burdens, and forcing innovation to move overseas.

Its "Principles for Digital Asset Taxation" include: a meaningful de minimis exemption; mining and staking rewards taxed as newly created property upon disposal; reporting arrangements that protect taxpayer privacy; taxation based on economic substance rather than technical form; and wash sale rules that prevent abuse without penalizing everyday activities.

The association also noted that the House Ways and Means Committee has previously advanced legislation related to digital asset taxation, and Senator Steve Daines has introduced a Senate version; despite Congress adjourning until after the November 3 election, a short session still presents a legislative window.
