ChainCatcher report: Hargreaves Lansdown, the UK’s largest retail investment platform, has announced the offering of nine Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded notes (ETNs) to its 2 million customers, reversing its previous cautionary stance on cryptocurrency investments. The new products, issued by providers including iShares (BlackRock), CoinShares, WisdomTree, 21Shares, Invesco, and Bitwise, carry annual fees ranging from 0% to 0.35%. New buyers must pass an appropriateness assessment and wait 24 hours before trading. This move follows the UK Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) removal of the retail ban on cryptocurrency ETPs in October last year. With assets under management exceeding $200 billion, Hargreaves Lansdown still states that Bitcoin “does not constitute an asset class,” but now provides clients with exposure to Bitcoin and Ethereum through its mainstream investment platform rather than cryptocurrency exchanges.
