ME News reports that, as of September 9 (UTC+8), The Economist estimates AI has created approximately 1 million new jobs in the United States to date, far surpassing the roughly 200,000 jobs eliminated due to AI since mid-2023. This conclusion is based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data released on September 4, showing that the U.S. economy added 162,000 new jobs in August, with the unemployment rate remaining steady at 4.1%. The gap between unemployment rates for young adults aged 20–24 and the overall rate has reached its lowest level in decades. Job growth has been driven primarily by high-skilled roles directly supporting AI and blue-collar positions linked to data center construction. Since 2022, roles for engineers, software developers, mathematicians, and data scientists have increased by approximately 730,000 above trend levels. The Burning Glass Institute’s chief economist estimates that about 1% of professional jobs in the U.S. can now be classified as AI-related roles, rising to 4–5% in computer science and life sciences. Data center construction spending has increased by 60% over the past year, boosting demand for electricians and HVAC technicians. Indeed data shows that salaries for data center installation and maintenance roles are approximately 40% higher than comparable positions. Customer service roles have declined by about 10% since January 2023, and administrative assistant roles by about 15%. Microsoft and Meta have reduced staff as they restructure around AI, while companies like Block and Intuit have replaced certain manual tasks with automation tools. U.S. businesses collectively announce approximately 16,000 AI-related layoffs per month on average. Economist Noah Smith notes that it is currently difficult to identify specific occupations that have been eliminated by AI. (Source: ChainCatcher)
