Tether posted $1.5 billion in Q3 2026 operating profit, matching the prior quarter, with a $7.95 billion reserve buffer, up from $4.11 billion in June. The stablecoin issuer cited U.S. Treasury bills and reverse repurchase agreements as key income sources. As of September 30, Tether held $191.45 billion in assets against $183.50 billion in liabilities, a 4.3% surplus. BDO Advisory Services issued a reasonable-assurance opinion on the report. The figures come amid ongoing Federal Reserve news on monetary policy. Real-world assets (RWA) news also remains a focus for stablecoin transparency.

Tether reported $1.5 billion in net operating profit for the third quarter of 2026, matching the previous quarter, while its excess reserve buffer reached $7.95 billion.

The USDT issuer said in its Oct. 30 release that U.S. Treasury bills and reverse repurchase agreements—short-term collateralized lending arrangements—generated most of that income. Net operating profit for the first nine months totaled $4.5 billion.

The reserve buffer was nearly double the $4.11 billion Tether disclosed for the end of June. It measures reserve assets minus all reported liabilities, rather than a separate pool of cash available for redemptions.

Tether's September-end financial figures and reserves report lists $191.45 billion in assets against $183.50 billion in liabilities. The surplus equaled about 4.3% of its $183.47 billion in reported digital-token liabilities, according to The Defiant's calculation.

BDO Advisory Services issued a reasonable-assurance opinion that the report was fairly presented, in all material respects, under its stated accounting policies. That assurance is limited to Sept. 30: it is not a full financial-statement audit or assurance on activity throughout the quarter.

The latest report also says opening equity and accounting policies were aligned with audited 2025 accounts. It does not supply a restated June-end buffer.

What Backs the Tokens

The report lists $122.84 billion in direct U.S. Treasury bills. These sit within a $139.58 billion category covering cash, cash equivalents and other short-term deposits, alongside reverse repos and bank deposits.

The reserves also include gold, bitcoin, equities and secured loans. Gold, bitcoin and financial investments are valued at fair value under the report's policies, making market prices relevant to the value of the backing.

The report says asset valuations assume normal trading conditions and do not reflect extraordinary market conditions or severe illiquidity at key custodians or counterparties, which could delay realization of those assets.
